Unanswered WhatsApp messages: find customer questions still waiting

Find unanswered WhatsApp messages from customers in your groups and check for later replies before you follow up. A worked example with a fictional studio.

By Michael Kisilenko · · 6 min read · Updated

Key takeaways

  • The Unanswered section of an Anyx note lists questions that got no reply in the group, with the name of who was asked.
  • A note reflects the chat as of the moment it was created, so check for later replies before you chase anyone.
  • Answers given by phone, in person or in another chat are invisible to Anyx.
  • Reported resolved lists what the group says is done, which can save you a follow-up nobody needs.

To find the customer questions still unanswered in your WhatsApp groups, you need two things: a list of questions that got no reply, and a quick check for replies that came later. Anyx AI Notes covers the first with an Unanswered section in its notes. This guide shows both steps with a fictional client group.

Disclosure: this is the Anyx blog. The studio, clients and messages below are fictional.

Why do customer questions get lost in WhatsApp groups?

A client group carries everything at once: photos, approvals, small talk and real questions. A question sent at 21:00 sinks under the next morning’s messages, and everyone assumes someone else answered it. You find out when the client asks again, a little less patiently.

Scrolling back works for one quiet group. It does not work for ten client groups with 40 new messages each.

How does Anyx find unanswered questions?

Anyx is an AI agent you add to a WhatsApp group you manage. You tag it once from your own number to link the group, and you tell the members it is there. From then on it writes a note for the group on a schedule and emails it to you. Notes are never posted to the group (how AI Notes work).

Three note sections matter here:

Section What it lists
Unanswered Questions that were asked and got no reply, with the name of who was asked
Open questions Topics that are still being discussed
Reported resolved Items the group says are done

Items can include the person involved, why it matters and a suggested next step. Empty sections are left out.

What does this look like in a client group?

Studio Lune is a fictional interior design studio. Say you run it. Maya is your designer, Tom runs the site work, and Rachel and Eli are the clients. Here is part of their week:

Four questions. Two got answers in the chat, two did not. On Friday morning you generate a note for Monday to Wednesday. It could look like this:

Unanswered

  • What is the lead time on the oak dining table?

    by Rachel, to Maya, Mon

Why it matters: The clients move in on the 20th.

Suggested next step: Check the supplier's lead time and reply in the group.

  • Does the 48,000 quote include VAT?

    by Eli, to Maya, Tue

Why it matters: The clients want to sign this week.

Suggested next step: Confirm the VAT line before they sign.

Reported resolved

  • The electrician moved the kitchen outlets

    Tom, Wed

  • Sofa fabric samples sent by courier

    Tom, Thu

Worth checking

  • Did Maya answer the VAT question outside the group, for example by phone?

18 messages in this period. Based only on captured messages.

Look at the samples. Rachel asked on Wednesday, inside the period, but Tom answered on Thursday, after it. Follow-ups are assessed as of the moment the note is created, and later messages are taken into account where Anyx has them. Because you created the note on Friday, Tom’s Thursday message could count. A note created on Wednesday night would likely have listed the samples as unanswered.

Does a newer update answer an older question? A real example

From a real workflow in a founder-owned work group, not an independent customer testimonial. Identifying details were removed or generalized, and this paraphrases the captured conversation and the generated notes.

In that group, someone asked a question about a shared initiative. Later the conversation moved to a follow-up meeting, and a partner reported that it was scheduled. The group’s note captured the scheduling report and still carried the earlier question forward among its open items.

These are two different things. A scheduled meeting says when the next conversation happens. It does not say the earlier question was answered. The note kept both in view, so a reader could ask whether the meeting would cover the question, or whether someone had already answered it elsewhere.

What this does not show: that Anyx booked the meeting (a participant reported it), that the meeting took place, that the question stayed unanswered everywhere, or that anyone read the note or acted on it. That is why you check before you follow up, as in the list below.

Why check for later replies before you follow up?

A note is a snapshot. It reflects the messages Anyx had when the note was created. Three things can happen after that moment, or outside the group:

  • Someone replies later in the group. The note you are reading does not know about it yet.
  • Someone answers outside the group. Anyx only sees chats it is part of. A phone call, a meeting, an email or a private chat never reaches it.
  • The answer came as a file. Voice notes are transcribed, but for images, documents and videos Anyx uses what it can read, such as captions and extracted text.

Similarly, when a deadline has passed and no message says the task was done, Anyx asks you to confirm whether it was completed, instead of declaring it unfinished.

Chasing someone about a question they already answered costs goodwill. A two-minute check avoids that.

What should you check before you follow up?

Run through this list for each item under Unanswered:

  1. Read the chat after the note’s period. Search for the topic in messages sent since the note was created.
  2. Ask the person who was asked. The note names them. A private “did you get back to Eli about VAT?” is gentler than a public reminder.
  3. Check other channels. Calls, meetings, email and other chats.
  4. Check Reported resolved. If the group already says it is done, confirm rather than chase.
  5. Check that the answer is still true. A price or date from last week may have changed.
  6. Then reply in the group yourself. Anyx does not post notes in the group, so the follow-up is yours to write.

How do you get a fresh list for a specific period?

Scheduled notes arrive every 24 hours by default, or every 6, 12 or 48 hours, or weekly. For a list right now, open the group on anyx.app under Settings, AI Brain, WhatsApp Groups, open the Notes tab and use Generate notes for a date range. Pick a start and an end (the end cannot be later than now) and choose Generate. It starts right away (settings).

Two good moments to use it:

  • Before a client call: a note for the days since your last call.
  • Before you chase an old item: a note for a range that ends now, covering every reply Anyx has captured so far.

In a client group, the client should know Anyx is there before you rely on it. Our privacy checklist covers what to tell them, and our comparison of four ways to summarize a group covers the alternatives.

What are the limits?

  • It only knows what it captured. Anyx only sees messages from after it joined the group. Older messages need a chat export import, and only their text comes in.
  • It reads replies as text. A short “sure” or “on it” can be read either way. For anything that affects money or dates, read the chat before you act.
  • It is not instant. A scheduled note can arrive some time after an interval ends.
  • It stores the group’s messages. While Anyx is in a group, it stores that group’s messages. Pausing or removing it does not delete stored data. To delete it, email support@anyx.app.
  • It is a paid product. Plans start at $35 a month for up to 4 groups, and new subscribers get a 7-day free trial.

FAQ

How does Anyx decide a question is unanswered?

The Unanswered section lists questions that were asked in the group and got no reply, with the name of who was asked. Anyx judges only from the messages it captured, so an answer given by phone or in another chat does not count.

What is the difference between Unanswered and Open questions?

Unanswered lists questions that got no reply. Open questions lists topics that are still being discussed. Both can appear in the same note, and empty sections are left out.

What if someone answered after the note was created?

A note reflects the chat as of the moment it was created. Check the chat for later replies, or generate a new note for a date range. Later messages are taken into account where Anyx has them.

Will the client see the list of unanswered questions?

No. Notes go to your email, or to up to 5 recipients you choose, and are never posted to the group. Anyx is still a member of the group, so tell the members it is there.

Do open items carry over to the next note?

Open questions and action items from the previous note carry forward until the group resolves them. Items the group says are done can appear under Reported resolved.
