Yes, in a few languages. Message Summaries ask Meta AI to summarize the unread messages in an individual or group chat. Only you see the summary, and it disappears when you leave the chat (WhatsApp Help Center).

To use it, turn on Private Processing under Settings, then Chats (it is off by default). Then open the group and tap the unread messages label.

The catches:

Language and country. As of September 2026, WhatsApp supports only English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish, and Meta AI is only available in some countries (About message summaries). Meta AI itself launched in Hebrew in Israel on June 30, 2026, so this may change.
One chat at a time. You open each group and ask.

How do you summarize a WhatsApp chat with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

Export the chat, then hand the file to a chatbot:

Open the group. On iPhone, tap the group name, then Export chat (steps). On Android, tap More options, then More, then Export chat (steps).
Choose Without media. On iPhone you get a ZIP file with the text inside.
Upload the file, or paste the text, into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
Ask for structure: “List the decisions, the unanswered questions, and who promised what by when.”

It covers whatever you export, and it works in Hebrew: Gemini, for example, lists Hebrew as a supported language.

The catches:

Manual every time. New messages mean a new export, and each export covers one chat.
No voice notes. Without media, recordings are left out.
Usage caps. ChatGPT’s free plan, for example, allows 3 file uploads a day (OpenAI).
Other people’s messages. The export holds what every member wrote, and they did not agree to share it with an AI service. On personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI may use your content to train its models unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls (OpenAI). Think twice with client or staff groups.

Can a browser extension summarize WhatsApp Web?

Yes. Extensions such as GistGem run on WhatsApp Web in Chrome or Edge: you pick one or several chats and a date range, then ask for a summary.
