WhatsApp does not email you a digest of your groups. You can get one in three ways: export the chat and email it to yourself by hand, build an automation that reads the group through a WhatsApp API, or add an AI agent such as Anyx to the group so it emails you a short note on a schedule.
Does WhatsApp have a built-in email digest?
No. As of September 2026, we found no email digest feature in the WhatsApp Help Center. Two built-in features come close, and both stay inside the app:
- Message summaries. Meta AI can summarize unread messages in an individual or group chat. WhatsApp says the summary appears in the chat, is visible just to you, and disappears when you scroll away or exit the chat. It is optional and currently supports English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish, in a limited set of countries (how to use it, about message summaries).
- Export chat. A one-off copy of a chat, covered below.
Neither one sends anything to your inbox on a schedule.
How do you email yourself a WhatsApp group chat by hand?
Use Export chat (WhatsApp Help Center):
- Open the group.
- On Android, tap More options, then More, then Export chat. On iPhone, tap the group name, then Export chat.
- Choose whether to include media.
- Choose Mail or your email app, and send it to yourself.
You get a text file of the chat, as a ZIP file on iPhone. If you include media, WhatsApp attaches the most recent media. The file is a copy, not a backup: you can’t import it back into WhatsApp.
Where it falls short:
- It is a raw log, not a digest. You still have to read it, or paste it into an AI tool for a summary.
- It is manual. A daily digest means exporting every group, every day.
- Members can’t export a group that has Advanced Chat Privacy or the newer Restricted chat setting turned on (WhatsApp blog, Help Center).
- The file holds everyone’s messages. Handle it with care.
Can you automate a WhatsApp digest with n8n?
Yes, if you can build and maintain a workflow. One example is the n8n template Automated daily AI summaries from WhatsApp groups, created by Daniel Lianes. According to its page, it:
- captures group messages through Evolution API, which it lists as its WhatsApp Business API integration;
- transcribes voice notes with OpenAI and analyzes the chat with a model accessed through OpenRouter;
- stores the messages in Google Sheets;
- sends a scheduled summary to your team on WhatsApp, daily by default.
As published, it delivers to WhatsApp, not email. For your inbox, add an email step such as n8n’s Send Email node, which sends through an SMTP server.
The template quotes 15 to 20 minutes of setup once all API accounts are configured. After that, the accounts, the n8n instance, the storage of every message and the upkeep are yours. It suits teams that want full control and have someone to maintain it.
How does an AI agent in the group email you a note?
Anyx is an AI agent that works inside WhatsApp: add it to your groups as a member and it emails you a short briefing of each one. With AI Notes, a note can cover what needs your attention, decisions, unanswered questions, action items and opportunities. Notes are never posted in the group, and Anyx replies there only when someone tags it.

You need a paid plan or an active trial. Plans start at $35 a month, and new subscribers get a 7-day free trial (plans). Your WhatsApp number is connected to Anyx during sign-up. Then follow the setup guide:
- Save Anyx as a contact from your private chat with it.
- Add Anyx to the group as a member.
- Mention it once from your own number, for example

A group with no messages during an interval gets no email. For older conversations, import a chat export and generate a note for any date range.

What are the limits?
The main gaps in Anyx AI Notes:
- It sees the groups you add it to, from the moment it joined. Older messages need a chat export import, and only their text comes in.
- A note reflects the messages it captured. Anything said by phone, in person or in other chats is missing.
- Timing is not exact. A note can arrive some time after an interval ends.
- Files have limits. Voice notes are transcribed, but for images, documents and videos Anyx uses what it can read and does not promise to understand every file.
- It stores group messages. Anyx stores the messages of the groups it is in. Pausing notes or removing Anyx does not delete that data. To delete it, email support@anyx.app from your account address (Privacy and security).
- It is a paid product. Starter covers up to 4 groups, Pro up to 30 and Max up to 120.
